Platform Art presents Platform Art Party #19: Art in AgriCulture on April 28 in downtown Lakeland.

A public art piece funded by Platform Art will be unveiled during the event, which is a celebration of Earth Month and Polk County’s rich agricultural heritage.

Popular belief is agriculture cannot exist in hot concrete jungles, but Art in AgriCulture will, in conjunction with the City of Lakeland, highlight “urban agriculture” by making improvements to the city’s environmental landscape.

Various community partners will present visual art, short films, sound and performance pieces focusing on Polk County’s agricultural heritage during the Art Party. An agriculture-themed fashion show will also take place, ensuring that all forms of art can represent agricultural heritage.

Along with a garden at the corner of New York Avenue and Orange Street, all efforts of Art in AgriCulture will ultimately help usher pedestrians seamlessly from The Lakeland Center to downtown locations such as Hollis Garden, the Frances Langford Promenade at Lake Mirror, shops, bars and restaurants in the area.

St. Petersburg artist Charlie Parker has been commissioned to design and produce a large ceramic tile mural to be installed on the Orange Street Bridge to create a gateway from The Lakeland Center into the downtown area.

For tickets to Art in AgriCulture, order online at www.platformart.org. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the event, $15 with student ID.

Wikipedia Definitions for Orbs & Spheres (and brassieres):

The word “orb”, from the Latin orbis ‘circle’, is another name for a round object, especially a disk or a sphere. In astrology, orb refers to the difference between the exactness of an astrological aspect. In optics, orb refers to an unexpected and often circular photographic artifact.

A sphere is a perfectly round geometrical object in three-dimensional space, such as the shape of a round ball. Like a circle in two dimensions, a perfect sphere is completely symmetrical around its center, with all points on the surface lying the same distance from the center point.

Celestial spheres, or celestial orbs, were the fundamental entities of the cosmological models developed by Plato, Eudoxus, Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus and others. In these celestial models the stars and planets are carried around by being embedded in rotating spheres made of an ethereal transparent fifth element (quintessence), like jewels set in orbs. In the heliocentric celestial orbs model introduced by Copernicus, the ascending order of the planets and their spheres going outwards from the Sun at the centre was Mercury, Venus, Earth-Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

In modern science, the orbits of the planets are simply the paths of those planets through mostly empty space. For medieval scholars, on the other hand, celestial spheres were actually thick spheres of rarefied matter nested one within the other, each one in complete contact with the sphere above it and the sphere below.

A brassiere, commonly referred to as a bra is an undergarment that covers, supports and elevates the breasts. Since the late 19th century, it has replaced the corset as the most widely accepted method for supporting the breasts. Women can choose from a wide assortment of bras for a variety of purposes: to enhance the perceived shape of her breasts, to minimize or to enlarge the perceived breast size, to restrain breast movement during an activity such as exercise, to enhance her cleavage, to conceal her nipples, to overcome sagging, for prosthetic purposes, or to facilitate nursing. Women’s breasts vary widely in size and shape. Most are asymmetric to a degree and can change from month to month depending upon a variety of factors. The bra has also become a garment with erotic significance and a feminine icon or symbol with political and cultural significance beyond its primary function.
